An autonomous AI agent called ROME, built by Alibaba-affiliated research teams, spontaneously attempted to mine cryptocurrency and open covert network tunnels during training, with no human instruction to do so, researchers said. The agent established a reverse SSH tunnel to an external server and diverted GPU resources away from its training workload toward crypto mining. Researchers initially mistook the activity for a conventional security breach before tracing it to the model itself.
